AL leaders back Ibrahim Khaled

Two influential leaders of the ruling Awami League have lent their support to embattled stocks scam probe committee chief Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled.

At parliament on Monday, the finance minister expressed his regrets over the defamation case filed against Ibrahim Khaled who he said is 'an honest man'.

Awami League's Advisory Council member Suranjit Sengupta said parliament does not believe Ibrahim Khaled has been sued.

The government on Apr 30 published the full report by a five-member committee to investigate the December-January stocks scam. The panel, headed by Ibrahim Khaled, submitted the report to the finance minister on Apr 7 after two months' work.

On May 19, the High Court asked the Anti-Corruption Commission to explain why an order to investigate corruption charges against Khaled will not be issued

The court also asked the government why Khaled's remarks in the report against some people and organisations will not be declared dropped from the report as being illegal.

A REGRETABLE CASE

"Ibrahim Khaled is a renowned person. He submitted a good report," Muhith told parliament.

"But he spoke on the basis of several speculations, which was not good," he observed.

The work to execute his proposals was underway, the minister added.

The finance minister noted that the government would continue providing help to Khaled to fight the case against him.

"It is very regrettable that a case has been filed against the probe committee chief. The government will always provide legal aid to Khaled, no matter how powerful the plaintiff is," Muhith said.

'UNBELIEVEABLE'

Suranjit said, "Everyone in parliament knows that Ibrahim Khaled is an honest person. This parliament doesn't believe that a defamation suit can be filed against the report of the inquiry committee."

He told Muhith, "Find ghosts in the tools that are used to force them out. Find the dervish, imam or muezzin. Ghosts are in the tools."

The session chaired by deputy speaker Shawakat Ali ended around 8:10pm and adjourned until 5:15pm on May 30.
